Toby and Emma attended the UK Passivhuas Conference this month. It was fantastic to catch up with all our Passivhaus colleagues, as well as learn about the latest certified projects and ideas. It’s always tough to choose between the concurrent sessions, and if we could we’d see them all, but our highlight was the ‘Large and complex buildings’ session with Sally from Warm and Gareth from Architype. They showed a few larger projects and explored the difficulties that large scale Passivhauses present. In fact, some things get a lot easier – the low form-factor of high-rise towers means that insulation can be relatively modest, and airtightness can be relatively easy. It turns out it’s all about the fenestration. A careful balance must be struck between daylight, solar gain (summer and winter), views and perception of outdoors, shading, glare and of course heat loss. We are looking forward to applying our deeper understanding of these principles on our next projects.
