Staff Spotlight - Olivia de Sousa Costa

What do you do at Greengauge?

I have been helping to develop Greengauge’s energy monitoring system. This involved a lot of playing around with software and hardware design to create something effective and easy to use. I also look at thermal bridge and condensation risk analysis of different build-ups using a few different software packages.

What motivates you to get up and go to work?

I find the work I am doing really varied and so coming to work everyday brings something new, which I really enjoy as it keeps me on my toes. Another big factor for me is the sustainability drive behind Greengauge; working for such a environmentally conscious company that is trying to make a positive impact on the industry makes me feel as though I am contributing to something bigger.

What do you like most about your job?

The constant learning. I come from a fundamental science background with very little in the way of construction knowledge, so everyday at Greengauge I am gaining new knowledge and learning how to apply what I know. Also, having three dogs in the office is the best!

If you could swap jobs with anyone who would it be?

I have always thought that working as an ecotourism guide would be amazing for a short time. I love the idea of getting to meet new people and take them on amazing trips whilst learning, teaching and spreading awareness about that particular environment.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?

I am quite a small quiet person, so most people are surprised to hear that I have a black belt in Shotokan karate.

What’s on your bucket list?

I have always been fascinated with the water and a few years ago I completed my scuba diving open water qualification. Now one of the top things on my bucket list is to go to Iceland and dive in the Silfra fissure, between the two tectonic plates. I think it would be so surreal (but also very cold!).
